Industrial linear barcode scanners remain the most common type of barcode readers in use today and feature one of three main technologies: laser, linear-imager or CCD.
Linear scanners represent practical solutions for a wide variety of applications, but are used most frequently with 1D UPC (Universal Product Code) barcodes at the point of sale (POS). In this application, UPCs are printed on the packaging and scanned at the checkout point. Linear barcode scanners are also widely used to track items for shipping and receiving, manufacturing, medical, and for logistical applications.
General purpose scanners serve well for libraries, light-inventory and office use, while industrial-duty scanners are more practical on the manufacturing line, in warehouses and at transportation terminals.
Connection to your computer or terminal can be achieved by using a keyboard wedge, USB keyboard emulation, RS-232 serial or other various interfaces.
