Industrial linear barcode scanners remain the most common type of barcode readers in use today and feature one of three main technologies: laser, linear-imager or CCD.

Linear scanners represent practical solutions for a wide variety of applications, but are used most frequently with 1D UPC (Universal Product Code) barcodes at the point of sale (POS). In this application, UPCs are printed on the packaging and scanned at the checkout point.
