Linear Bar Code Scanners
Linear Barcode Scanners are the most popular equipment used today to read barcodes. They are used most frequently with UPC (Universal Product Code) bar codes at the Point Of Sale (POS). These bar codes are printed on the packaging, and are scanned at the checkout lane. Another very popular application uses barcode scanners to track items for shipping and receiving.
Three main technologies are utilized: Laser, Linear Imager, and CCD. The most popular ways to connect barcode scanners to your computer or terminal are: Keyboard Wedge, USB Keyboard Emulation, and RS-232 Serial interfaces.
Other interfaces, used with special cables, also exist - one lets the scanner look like it is a barcode wand, known as wand emulation. Other interfaces enable the scanner to connect directly to a number of different POS desktop and portable terminals.
These bar code scanners are offered both as stand alone devices and, for your convenience, in kits that add an interface cable (and sometimes a required power supply), and possibly other accessories, such as a desktop stand.
