Omnidirectional linear barcode scanners are typically used for applications in which hands-free scanning is required, as most are stationary and are mounted to a countertop or wall. Some omnidirectional scanners may be handheld, however, and are used when a barcode cannot be easily or quickly lined up with the scanner. Utilized most frequently for Point Of Sale (POS) applications, omnidirectional scanners can function either using presentation mode or by sweep scanning.
Omnidirectional scanning technology is laser-based, using a multi-faceted, spinning mirror. These scanners are typically connected to a computer via Keyboard Wedge, USB Keyboard Emulation, or RS-232 Serial interface. Other interfaces, used with special cables, enable the scanner to be connected directly to a number of different POS terminals, as well. L-Tron’s bar code scanners are typically provided in convenience kits, containing the scanner, as well as a specific interface cable and an AC power supply, if needed.
