Good, Better, Best … Which Device Will Work Best For My Warehouse Application?

As solutions experts, we are accustomed to getting all kinds of questions about how to determine which device is the “best” device.  Our line of questioning helps narrow down the focus and provide a recommendation for a product that will increase operating efficiencies and control costs for our customers.

As you begin the process of researching mobile devices, consider these questions:

Are you currently using bar codes in your application?
As automation experts, we always hope the answer will be a resounding “YES!” but when the answer is “NO” we realize it opens up a world of opportunity for increased worker productivity, decreased error rates, and fewer headaches for the customer!  Once you determine the type of bar code being read (1D or 2D), make sure you select a device that works best on that bar code.

How will the bar codes be used?
If you’re trying to scan bar codes that are on packages in a shipping department, your needs will be quite different than a bar code that needs to be read from a rack of inventory on a shelf.  If your needs are long-range reading, then you’ll need to seek out this feature during your research.

How rugged is your environment?
If your warehouse environment is like most warehouses, you operate with a concrete floor, and ample amounts of dust and dirt!  Be sure to look for a drop spec that is satisfactory (surviving multiple drops from 5+ feet), and an IP rating that matches your environment.  This information is typically found on the product datasheet.

What is your typical operating temperature?
Extreme temperatures may affect the battery life of a unit, the screen & housing, and the operating system. In cold storage applications, or going from cold temperatures to hot temperatures condensation issues can occur.  This can cause internal components to corrode and ultimately to fail, it can also put a drain on battery life. If you’re operating in extreme temperatures, be sure to select a unit that is designed for cold conditions and will prevent condensation from occurring.

Which type of keypad configuration will work best for your needs?
What information needs to be typed in (numeric, alphanumeric) and how many characters. There are several varieties of keypads available, and keys can include special function or programmable keys.

What is the operation system of the handheld computer?
Handheld computers come with either a version of Windows Mobile or a scaled down version of windows called Windows CE. You need to check with the provider of your warehouse software to ensure that the computer will work with both the type of operation system and the version. Handheld computers can also come preloaded with terminal emulation or with browser capability, should your application not be running on the handheld computer.

What type of screen brightness and contrast do you need?
Consider the lighting conditions where the mobile computer will be used. Will it be used in bright sunlight or in dimly lit conditions? Screens are offered with a variety of options based on brightness and contrast.  Demonstrate the unit are considering (if you can) in the actual conditions you will be using the unit to ensure that it performs to your expectations.
