How to Use a Mobile Boarding Pass

mobile boarding pass

Here is my mobile boarding pass from Delta this past weekend

I used my first mobile boarding pass today and I have to say, I won’t be going back to paper. And this trend is broader than just my flying habits. Mobile boarding passes are up and coming with a projected 1 out 3 flyers using them in 2019! If you’ve never used a mobile boarding pass, you may have some questions. Read on and learn more.

How do mobile boarding passes work?

1. When you purchase your tickets, the supported airline will usually give you a few boarding pass delivery options:

  • Mobile boarding pass
  • Email and print boarding pass
  • Print at the Airport boarding pass

I selected the “mobile boarding pass” option and I got a text message right to my phone with links to both of my boarding passes.

2. You can click and access this information at any time after check-in is complete.

It will display your name, gate (although depending on the airline your gate may or may not show), seat assignment, a barcode, your destination, and arrival/departure times – it’s just the same as your paper passes!

3. You will need to have your mobile boarding pass ready at the first TSA security check so you can enter the security line.

4. Once you are finally ready to go through security, TSA will take your phone and scan it face down on a tall scanner, and your name will instantly pop up on a small display screen.

5. After that, you can put your phone away until you are at your gate and ready to board.

Although if you are like me, you will have your phone out the whole time – texting, updating social media, browsing the internet, checking the weather, and more. Seriously, what did we do before smartphones?

6. Upon boarding, you need to have your phone back out, and your boarding pass pulled up on the screen.

TIP: Make sure to take a screen shot, just in case you don’t have internet access (you don’t want to be held up!)

7. Your mobile boarding pass will then be scanned one more time (just like the paper one) at the gate to enter the plane.

It’s as simple as that! I was amazed at how easy it was. Plus, I didn’t have to worry about where I put that piece of paper or worry about it falling out of one of my huge bags.
