On Scene at a Car Accident: My Observations of Emergency Workers

On our way to a Memorial Day picnic last week, my family and I witnessed a horrific sight. The small SUV driving in front of us left the road and flipped twice before being stopped against a tree. new-york-state-policeWe immediately pulled over, my husband ran to the accident scene and I quickly scrambled to call 911 and report the accident.

I have no idea how, but the driver of the vehicle and her two young children, ages 6 and 2, miraculously escaped without any serious injuries. I truly thought that the situation would have resulted in a much graver outcome and could not have been more thrilled that everyone was OK.

When the emergency workers and first responders arrived on scene, I felt overcome with so much emotion. From the firefighters and paramedics to the police officers, each and every person that arrived on scene was so calm, attentive and professional. The way that they interacted with the children who had been involved in the accident was so caring, as well.

In fact, one Police Officer went to the totaled vehicle to search for the children’s toys after he overheard how concerned they were about missing their beloved items!

It’s those little things that our public servants do behind the scenes, with no desire for recognition, that make all the difference.

And what really got to me was that it was a holiday. A day that each of them would have probably much rather been at their own Memorial Day picnics, with their families, enjoying the beautiful weather. But instead, they were selflessly spending their days on duty, serving others in need. I am so thankful for all of the heroes we are surrounded by, working to keep us safe! As the mother and children began treatment in the ambulance, the county sheriff’s department began to interview my husband and I. We gave our report and then one Officer asked for our identification to scan back in the patrol car to add our information to the accident report. I had a momentary glimmer of excitement when I realized that he was using the 4910LR driver’s license scanner to collect our personal information with the click of a button – and this time it wasn’t for the purpose of an eCitation! It literally took 30 seconds for the Officer to walk to the car, scan our information and then return our licenses to us. So cool! (At least for a techie dork like me!)

For the rest of the day, I could not get the image of the vehicle rolling out of my head, but I just felt so thankful that my family was safe and that the family involved was safe.

So, all’s well that ends well in this story, but it is a story I won’t forget for many years to come.
